Sorry, I don't know. They are not portable programs since all POSIX
says is that the exit status is greater than 1 on failure. But I
suspect there are some.

Hardly anybody pays attentions to such announcements, unfortunately.

We already have an option that does that: --brief.
This is starting to sound more and more complicated, a complexity that
doesn't yield much benefit. Let's not have an option: let's just
yield some other small number (i.e., 3) for the kind of failure that
you don't think should be a failure.
