yes, we could make use of more detailed description.

A wild guess:
it might be something with locale settings.  Try running grep with LC_ALL=C.
        export LC_ALL=C  # in bash

Or else try to investigate what is the locale setting in shell and in cron.
The command ``locale'' describes current settings.
