   where Gawk installs its data files (in datadir or in some
   subdirectory thereof, perhaps even in a machine- and
   version-specific subdirectory).

Erm, I'm not sure I understand you, are you arguing that packages
should not install their files in a subdirectory in datadir?  And on
top of it do things like?

datadir = @datadir@/awk

So that "configure --datadir=FOO" and "make datadir=FOO install"
behave differently?

I don't know about you, but it sure makes it easier to predict where
gawk and any other program that follows the GCS installs their
files...

   I'm glad that Aharon rejected those changes, but I'm concerned some
   other package could accept them.

I must have missed something, what changes?
