grep colour usage

Hi,

I have defined GREP_COLOR in my environment. The colour shows up using
grep without any options but doesnt show when using grep with -i or -r
option.

Following is my system configuration.

$ grep -V
grep (GNU grep) 2.5.1
$ uname -a
Linux sauron 2.6.11amit #1 Wed Apr 6 14:20:54 EEST 2005 i686 GNU/Linux
$ cat /etc/issue
Debian GNU/Linux 3.1 \n \l
