The autom4te.cache directory speeds up runs of autoconf, at the possible
expense of remembering cached answers that are now incorrect due to other
changes made in the meantime. It is purely a cache, and can safely be
deleted at any time, with the only penalty being slower runs of autoconf.
You may also be interested in this quote from the autoconf documentation:

| As an example, to disable Autoconf caches (autom4te.cache)
| globally, include the following lines in ~/.autom4te.cfg:
|
| ## ------------------ ##
| ## User Preferences. ##
| ## ------------------ ##
|
| begin-language: "Autoconf-without-aclocal-m4"
| args: --no-cache
| end-language: "Autoconf-without-aclocal-m4"

However, I find with my usage patterns the time savings of using it
outweighs the inconvenience of having to occasionally remove the directory
when I have changed enough other things in my system that the cache is no
longer accurate.
