I'm not sure :).

    If I recall correctly the order of "cmd1 && cmd2 || cmd3" is okay.  

Sounds kind of right, but all I really know is that the rule I
internalized (far too long ago to recall any specifics as to what shells
were involved) was "don't rely on the precedence of && and || in sh",
especially since it's so simple to avoid.

And given the plethora of relatively recent buggy-in-general shells and
specifications out there, I still think it's a good idea :).
