Thanks a lot for the feed-back, but I figured out what my problem was:
some stale files from a previous build, so a "make clean" sorted that
out. How embarrassing! :P

Turns out building gettext on MSYS works just fine for me, I was just
being a moron! Sorry for wasting your time.
