POSIX requires status 0 for identical, status 1 for different, and
status >1 for error:

Meanwhile, the POSIX folks are considering a proposal to have the next
revision of POSIX require that all man pages include a section on return
status; this would impact several GNU programs to start including this
information in a more consistent manner (at least for those GNU projects
that provide man pages to begin with, since GNU Coding Standards do not
require man pages).
