I think the trouble was that the top level Makefile.in in the repository
isn't up to date.  Users with automake and friends probably wouldn't be
affected, but this would break things if you just run ./autogen.sh.

I've committed a new Makefile.in now -- this ought to compile if you
"cvs update", "./autogen.sh", "./configure" and "make".
