Someone else on this mailing list had the same problem recently. The problem comes from the recent Internet worms and his ISP. See the post "multiple copies of list postings" from Jim for a detailed explanation.

Any idea why the gnubg folders display as a "disk" (I can eject it) rather
than a folder

I don't know the Mac at all. But this seems to be a Mac feature, that you can use to easily distribute a set of files and folders, just like one would with a compressed archive on a PC. Maybe it's even possible to run gnubg right from this disk image, but I suppose the normal procedure is to copy the contents into a newly created program/installation folder.
