Thanks, that did the trick. Now I remember this may have been asked
before on the list (a new candidate for the faq). But the message
after setting lang is a bit irritating:

  The language preference has been set to `de_DE'.
  Please remember to save settings.

Perhaps we should change it to

  Changes do have effect after you saved settings and restarted
  gnubg.

PS. The list is awfully slow again. My last messages spent more than 
three hours at gnu.org getting through spam and virus filters.
