If I force it to redraw (by dragging the window outside the screen and back again), the DOS box with the error message appears. It looks like some kind of (video) memory leak.
Maybe it's worth noting that I have installed DX9 SDK with debug version of DX libraries, although I use the retail version and also I don't think it should influence OGL.

Looks very much like a graphics card/driver problem.  Which graphics
card have you got and have you got the latest drivers?
