Here's my problems:

My system uses Python 2.2, and I had to manually change the GNUmakefile
to read PYVERSION = 2.2. I also had to adjust the python include path
and link path to make it compile on my system here. Else it works fine.


Yes. This is where the automake should kick in - identifying the python version and setting the compilation flags.

I think my problems a mostly caused by the pretty unstandard system
here.

Which are?
