The problem had nothing to do with gnudb.  I offer my humblest apologies.
That was just the first of several OS illnesses today.  Rebooting fixed
them all.

on Redhat EL5.  Should I submit a bug report, or should I build with a
more stable version first.  Is there any more information I can get
before submitting a bug report?
