Perhaps we could make a more verbose error message when the 3d board fails. It could make it easier to help people out, and possibly help us make the code compatible with more cards/drivers.

First go to display properties->settings->advanced->troubleshoot and set the
hardware acceleration to "none", restart gnubg and the 3d board will probably
show.  This means that the graphics card driver isn't compatible with the 3d
board, try updating the driver or setting the hardware acceleration slightly
less than "full".  Having a play with any opengl settings for your graphics card
may help too.

If the first test fails (i.e. the board doesn't show with no hardware
acceleration) then there's probably something wrong with gnubg...
