Installing X11 on my Macs has always been easy, for me at least. And I used fink and Apple's X11 together for several years without problems, though I now no longer use fink. For folks running OS X 10.5 (Leopard), the latest (and much improved X11) is available at http://xquartz.macosforge.org/trac/wiki .
About gtk, I haven't tried the OS X port. X11 works fine for me, and compiling gtk from source on my Mac is easy. Maybe someone else will give the native version a try.

Several (non-technical) people have told me they had difficulty getting gnubg to
run on Macs. One of the hurdles seems to be installing X11 (clashes with fink
