There are certainly room for improvement in the user interface part of
the auto-save feature.

For the reasons mentioned by others I aimed for a solution that would
work regardless of the current file name and status of the open file.

Where we come up short compared to other programs is that we open
multiple instances of gnubg - how does one keep track of the ownership
and status of the auto-saves? That is, is autosave.sgf from a live or a
dead session? Since we don't know the answer to that question we cannot
help the user in case of a crash. Perhaps making it clear
(configurable?) where auto-saves are located would help a lot?
