Do you use the 3D graphics ? If this is the case could you try to switch 
to 2D view and see if it helps ?

Since a few month ago, new versions of the Mesa graphics library started 
to appear in various Linux distributions and gnubg's 3D board doesn't 
work any more with them.

Exact package names and version vary depending on the distribution, 
mesa-*-drivers on Ubuntu for instance, and from the samples I could look 
at, the behaviour for various versions is approximately:
21.2 and earlier : ok
later 21.x, 22.0 and 22.1 : crash when clicking on a checker
22.2 and later : doesn't crash but the mouse click is not handled and play is 
practically impossible
