Hello,
an m4 bug report showed a problem with the ``old'' regex code which is
fixed by the ``new'' implementation. See
http://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/bug-m4/2004-11/msg00214.html
The new implementation, by Isamu Hasegawa from IBM Japan, has been accepted
to GNU libc several years ago. As gnulib is often supposed to provide
an up-to-date GNU implementations for non-GNU systems, or for systems
with an old copy of GNU libc, it's very confusing if gnulib diverges from
glibc this way.
GNU sed and gawk use the new regex for ages. GNU grep will switch to it
very soon, and in fact uses the new regex in most instalations, as the
configure uses the system regex on GNU systems.
The ``old'' one is dead and should be no longer distributed.
Are you willing to upgrade the regex module in gnulib?
Have a nice day,
Stepan Kasal
