Imagine a case like findutils where there are two pairs of
directories, gnulib/m4 and gnulib/lib for gnulib sources,

All the implications are not clear to me, but this approach from
findutils seems by far the cleanest for using gnulib to me. One
directory for gnulib stuff, one directory for package-specific "lib"
stuff.

I'm sure that in many cases AC_LIB{SOURCES,OBJS} won't be needed in the
package directory. I don't foresee needing it in Texinfo or Hello, for
example. However, in more complex packages, I could certainly imagine
it being desirable.

My $.00002.
