Hi Neil,

A few points... 

  1) Please do not use MIME formats in message to
     the address@hidden list.

  2) It seems that the patch you sent was stripped
     by the list software on gnu.org (normally it
     throws away attachments of any kind).

  3) The lib/xgethostname.c file is maintained in
     the GNULIB project. The appropriate place to
     report bugs is address@hidden a web page
     http://www.gnu.org/software/gnulib/ has the
     guidelines for this project.

I am adding address@hidden to this message so
that they see a description of your problem. They
may wish to consider an MacOSX change even without
the patch your message to address@hidden was

I will leave that for the GNULIB maintainers to consider.

For now, you could add something like


to the generated config.h file so that you didn't
have to modify any of the canonical sources...

Yes, we should fix that problem in the CVS sources. 

Would it make sense to fallback to "localhost" as the hostname if
xgethostname () returns NULL (in addition to printing an error)?
