The fix is to
  find FOOPKG-x.y.z -exec chmod u+rwx \{\} \; && rm -rf FOOPKG-x.y.z

I see the point that Automake's behavior here is annoying at times, but
it really helps to find some nasty packaging bugs not found otherwise.
