This is about Mac OS X 10.5 PowerPC, right? With the most-recent version dated
2009 and last supported by Apple in 2011? If that's the extent of the problem,
it's low priority and the rare users who want to build stuff can be expected to
read manuals on occasion, and to set environment variables or whatever to get a
properly functioning build chain.
We could put a note about this particular portability issue in the Gnulib manual
somewhere, say.
