Forgive me if this is a silly question, I have focused on
pygnulib/*.py and have not looked at the bootstrap script or the
recent thread on it. But would this work on stable branches?

Since the stable branches don't have the updated gnulib-tool.py files
I could see a checkout breaking things. I'm not familiar enough to know
if you worked around this already though.
