Did that.

I had /usr/lib/GNUstep in my PATH from my last debian install of
it. It's removed now.

Done. Results are here:

Description: ./configure --prefix=/usr/GNUstep

Done. This fails with (I only included the last few lines):

Not that I knew. This is my environment in the shell in which I tried
building gstep:

Description: env > environment
