Note the use of 'sudo' ... I expect the error message is entirely correct, [...]

Please also note the "sudo echo $GNUSTEP_MAKEFILES" I added at the bottom of the report, which shows the environment is set correctly. Using sudo is the usual way to install something on Mac OS X or Ubuntu and it changes the user-id, but not the environment.
