can you please try to open the extensions/gnash.xpi file directly from
IceCat? Does it create that directory?

Answer #2: (answer #1 sent separately)

I moved the previous installation aside and unpacked the i386 tarball
again. This time when icecat started, I said "cancel" to its offer of
installing gnash, and then, once again, there was no
extensions/gnash.xpi file. I guess it gets deleted when you say cancel.

So I unpacked the gnash.xpi file individually from the tarball, put it
into the /usr/local/gnu/icecat-3.0.4-g1/extensions dir, started icecat
(which did not offer to install it), and visited
file:///usr/local/gnu/icecat-3.0.4-g1/extensions/gnash.xpi. It gave me
the install now button, which I pressed. Fine. Then it said "restart
icecat now", and gave me a button to do that. So I pressed the button,
and icecat duly restarted.

And now there is indeed a
directory with a goodly collection of files.

However, visiting
still says "to view this content download the flash player". If I click
on the first song, it offers to start the "movie player", which is
apparently Totem somehow. (I never configured that, or any other
plugins of any kind.) Gnash does not appear to be involved.

So I remain stymied. Sorry.
