Turns out the black screen is an upstream issue in Firefox
(https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1494022). Official versions are
currently compiled with the macOS SDK 10.11 (which is more than 3 years old). I
had 10.14 (the currently latest version) installed locally which is apparently
not compatible.

I fetched the 10.11 SDK from https://github.com/phracker/MacOSX-SDKs, linked it
into
/Applications/Xcode.app/Contents/Developer/Platforms/MacOSX.platform/Developer/SDKs
 and then ran configure with

env CXX='/usr/bin/clang++ -stdlib=libc++' ../configure --with-l10n-base=../l10n
--enable-official-branding
--with-macos-sdk=/Applications/Xcode.app/Contents/Developer/Platforms/MacOSX.platform/Developer/SDKs/MacOSX10.11.sdk

Note the last argument that forces the old SDK. Afterwards make and make
package et voilà: habemus Icecat on Mac. Eat that Apple! :)

Now, having gone through this odyssey, I feel somewhat obliged to making this
easier for other people who have (or want) to use a Mac. I suppose being an
unknown outsider, GNUzilla wouldn't be interested in hosting my .dmg of Icecat
on their site, right? Does anyone have thoughts on what the most appropriate
way to share this would be? Maybe I could collect my modifications as patches
in a GitHub repository and attach the .dmg when tagging a release?
