Many of my Gnu utilities can handle NTFS alternate data streams with no fuss.  
GREP.EXE cannot.

v:\> g:\gnu\wc -l timecheck.btm:servers.txt
19 timecheck.btm:servers.txt

v:\> g:\gnu\head -n 2 timecheck.btm:servers.txt
time-a-g.nist.gov          NIST, Gaithersburg, Maryland
time-b-g.nist.gov          NIST, Gaithersburg, Maryland

v:\> g:\gnu\tail -n 2 timecheck.btm:servers.txt
#tick.usnogps.navy.mil   Colorado Springs, Colorado
#tock.usnogps.navy.mil   Colorado Springs, Colorado

v:\> g:\gnu\grep Colorado timecheck.btm:servers.txt
g:\gnu\grep: timecheck.btm:servers.txt: No such file or directory

v:\> g:\gnu\grep --version
GNU grep 2.5.4
