Two-column mode in -me package

Hello all,

I  have been tinkering with groff (nroff script) and discov-
ered strage behavor with the handling of the  2-column  mode
in nroff with the -me package.

Nroff-ing  the  following  source with groff 1.20.1 yields a
single column, whilst the same source with .pl 100 works  as
expected - resulting in a two-column document... But how can
page length affect this?
