Oh, I forgot to supply an exhibit of the bad behavior of groff 1.22.4.
Incidentally, I noticed this because the GNU Automake "distcheck" target does
a build as part of your build, to test your distribution tar archive. It does
this in a remote subdirectory and supplies the "configure" script with
directory names as long as your arm. I was seeing warnings in the distcheck
build that never appeared in a normal build, and, concerned, I looked into
why.
