When groff is given a directory name as an input "file," it silently ignores
it. Some preprocessors are not so charitable but still obscure the nature of
the problem.

$ groff -ww /tmp
$ groff -t -ww /tmp
grops:<standard input>:(/tmp):6: fatal error: 'V' command invalid before first
'p' command
