  Can't you determine if a program runs on DOS or not by the program
itself? I don't remember well, but there should be a way to detect the
presence of an extender. If that is difficult or impossible, you
should pass another magic in EAX from your DOS loader.

  No and yes. The Multiboot Specification 0.7 is in progress and GRUB
doesn't support the new features yet.
