Wheres my Win 98 C: drive gone part 2.

Hello again,

Thanks for the suggestions.

Well, I still have my problem (see first thread on this subject).

In preparation to solve my problem I have produced/located all Linux and
Win 98 boot floppies that I am likely to need, and because my C: is
still accessable from Linux, I have backed up all 14000 (appx) files to
a different physical hard disk.

I have used Linux fdisk to confirm my partition type is 0b, and that it
is marked as bootable. I have also used DOS fdisk, and it can see C: but
says its 'System' is UNKNOWN (this column should normally say FAT32 I
think).

I then tried booting to DOS and running fdisk /mbr. C: was still not
accessable, I still get Invalid Media Type reading drive C.

Then I rebooted and this time I got stage 1 stage 1.5 (both repeated
some 40 times) followed by 'hard disk error'.

Now DOS fdisk /mbr should have wiped GRUB from my MBR, but the messages
I got are consistent with a GRUB MBR, not a WIn 98 one. fdisk /mbr is
supposed to only write the MBR for the master device on the first IDE
channel.

Anyone know why it didn't for me? Or should I put that question to
Microsoft (whom I am sure are all knowledgeable about the effects of
GRUB on Windows operating systems <VBG>).

I know DOS fdisk /mbr is undocumented, but everyone I have talked to
agrees it should overwrite what is present.

Anyhow, despite several fdisk /mbr's and grub-install /dev/hda's, I
still can not get Windows to boot, C: is still invalid and scandisk can
not get at C: to repair it but Linux still thinks its a vfat file system
and accesses it OK

Wonder if I can run something like Norton utilities via wine......
