After having done some more experimenting I have "succeded" in provoking the 
same curios behavior with other nic's so, you're probably right that this is  
really some grub-related. It might be that the problem is memory related 
(grub overwriting some of the kernel or something), and hence easier to spot 
with additional drivers compiled in, indeed my first guess was that it had to 
do with the splashscreen patch I used to have compiled in, but it still 
occurs after having removed that part.

I might try with 0.91 or something..

I have tried that in my original setup, but it didn't work either.
