I prefered the standard mail discussion. It offered the 
simple possibility to discuss some points or to help
other people with problems (support) very easy, and this
work was also possible to do in a 5 minutes slot of spare
time. Using a tool (web based or not) is not possible to
do this in small spare time slots ...

On the other side a bug tracking tool has also advantages,
but I would prefer this as addon.
What do you think about GNATS ?
