sis900 problems

I had a working GRUB boot floppy which loaded a Linux kernel over the
network and booted it, and life was grand.  However, I've upgraded the
motherboard in that system, and this one has an onboard LAN interface
(sis900) that I'd like to use.  So I rebuilt grub with the sis900 driver
(using CVS from 2002/08/23), installed it on my floppy, and I get:

Found SIS900 at 0xd400, ROM address 0xff00
Probing...[SIS900]sis900_probe: Error EERPOM[sic] read 0000
sis900_probe: Error MAC address not found
[the same thing repeated]

Error 12: Invalid device requested

I had been using this particular motherboard in a different machine, and its
onboard LAN worked fine with the Linux sis900 driver.
