Grub messes up extended FAT32 partitions

Using map (hd1) (hd0), map (hd0) (hd1) before booting Windows makes
the logical FAT32 partitions inside the extended one inaccesible. They
show up in fdisk as UNKOWN type. For some reason, trying to boot
without the map's (just rootnoverify + chainloader + makeactive)
causes a freeze and beeping. Any ideas? I tried switching my hards
around in various configs, same thing.
