Installing GRUB on usb-storage failed

Hi,

I tried to install Grub on my usb mass storage (an usb stick with 64MB
RAM). When I do grub-install --root-directory=/mnt /dev/sdb1 I get the
following message:

The file /mnt/boot/grub/stage1 not read correctly

When I try to boot from my usb stick Grub reports ERROR 17. I wonder if
Grub supports booting from usb so far. Boot from usb is enabled in my
bios (as boot from USB-HDD), and the stick is configured as usb-storage
device sdb1. Any suggestions ?
