Tracking down stage2 problems

Hi,

GRUB fails to load stage1.5 on my system. It is an MSI 6163 with two
non-booting Maxtor ATA drives connected to the onboard ultra66
controller, and a WDC 20G drive connected to the onboard PIIX
controller.

The BIOS mis-detects the geometry of the WDC drive; however, lilo loads
ok with the lba32 option. GRUB fails however trying to find the stage
1.5 bootloader with an Error 18.

What should I do to track this problem down? One concern is that
perhaps lilo is ok with the geometry being wrong because it uses the LBA
address on disk and ignores the CHS geometry; but maybe GRUB uses the
CHS geometry instead to find the stage1.5, and that's why it doesn't
work.

Any thoughts or instructions would be appreciated. I have GRUB working
on another box that quad-boots Debian, Win2K, OS/2, and Beos, and I love
it! Just want to get it working on this one.

Thanks,
