Beginning with FreeBSD version 5.1 the partition-labeler will use 
the (new) UFS2 filesystem as default. This UFS2 filesystem couldn't 
be mounted via GRUB. 

If you use a / (root) partition ~150MB in the FreeBSD-5.1 slice
with the UFS1 filesystem and all other partitions with the features
of the new UFS2 filesystem then you are be able to use GRUB 
furthermore. To modify the filesystem-type in the partition-labeler
in FreeBSD put only a 1 at the point with the filesystem. Then it
will change to UFS1. 

The last few days there was a discussion on this ML about a patch
for the GRUB source files. Maybe in a few days you are be able
to boot the UFS2 filesystem fromout GRUB directly.
