I believe this is not true currently. For NetBSD 1.6.1 GRUB was able to
boot via:

  kernel --type=netbsd /netbsd

There are other needs for GRUB to support *BSD better, and to keep supporting
them in the future.

UFS2 would be nice for example, since FreeBSD 5.1 or newer come with UFS2
by default and other *BSD might adopt it at some point. There was someone
working on UFS2 for GRUB, but it seems development is stalled. Would you
like to work on this?

Okuji, is UFS2 ok to go for 0.9x? Note that FreeBSD 5.1 or newer default
installs are not supported without it.
