Hi Jonathan

The command line tool grub-set-default will set which menu item to boot
on next!
The savedefault command will in the menu.lst file set which to boot on
next.
 
With grub-set-default to set grub to boot on ex. 4 and in menu item 4,
savedefault sets it back to 1

Unfortunately you need at least grub 0.96 to do this.

And to my knowlegde of Fedora kernel upgrades, it will rotate all the
menu items, so you may still need to modify something during this
upgrade.
