Details:

In Ubuntu, the default GRUB configuration has a splashimage of a mainly black
XPM image and no color setting.

Using this configuration, the currently selected item shows only a white
cursor at the end of the line, rather than the entire line in inverse video.

Setting "color white/black black/white" also fails to use inverse video when
a splashimage is enabled.
Worse !
I had filed the bug for double 'splashimage', when the whole screen was
jumbled up and no menu ever shown, but autostart of the default entry
effectuated.

That had been noted as 'fixed'; as well in Debian (I'm running Sarge).
Now *any* splashimage anywhere (inside auto-update or outside) will
result in this behaviour, while colours work okay.
I tried by adding / removing the single splashimage line and could
confirm this behaviour. Some work was done on that item, but a new bug
introduced (so it seems).

Last remark: while the earlier bug was a general one and acknowleged as
such, this latest twist only happens on a DELL Latitude D400, while a
DELL Inspiron 8100 works properly.
