I am not very sure but can you check if in your compilation folder are 
there some start_1_5_e2fs and similar files?

One thing is how you you compile grub and another thing is how you install 
grub. When installing grub you can decide by deleting or not all the stage1
_5 files if you want Grub not to load them or yes.
