Grub 1.95 location of grub.conf?

I'am using the GPT table since we have very large devices.
So I compiled and installed grub-1.96 but it doesnt use my
grub.conf nor menu.lst.

Steps so far:
./configure --prefix /boot/grub2
<compile'n'install>

Patched /boot/grub2/sbin/grub-install to point $grubdir to /boot/grub2.

Install grub on the device:
/boot/grub2/sbin/grub-install /dev/sda
/boot/grub2/sbin/grub-setup --directory=/boot/grub2/lib/grub/i386-pc
/dev/sda

No errors reported. Reboot to try..

Now I only get the grub> prompt, and I have to enter the linux and
initrd info
manually.

Any ideas? I have grub.conf in:
/boot/grub2/etc AND
/boot/grub2/lib/grub/i386-pc/ AND
/boot/grub2/lib/grub/i386-pc/menu.lst

Also tried using grub2.conf as filename but no luck.

None are used / found?
