Details:

As reported by Luca Capello in Debian BTS:

The following grub.cfg menuentry has a syntax error.  However, grub won't
display an error message and let you continue.  Instead, it will start an
infin loop, rendering the machine unbootable:

  menuentry "test" { $ }
