grub 2 (difficulty, not a bug)

I'd like to be able to remove boot entries.
Currently, in my ubuntu9.10 system, the first Microsoft system to
appear is the first partition.
However if I select it, it wipes out my Vista system since it is the
"recovery" partition of my notebook.
However I'm told not to change grub.cfg

Can you make an easy way of not having certain entries appear?
