Check your CentOS bug. Was the encouragement from a triager? Or was it from
the bug's owner? By now most distros know that any Legacy Grub "bugs" they
want fixed will need fixing by the distro, not upstream. If CentOS has a
Legacy Grub bug you want fixed or feature you want added, and no one from
CentOS is willing or able to deal with your need or desire, you might try an
investigation of other distros, which may have what you seek, which might be
ported over to CentOS. Or, consider switching to one of those other distros.

Also, if you use a primary partition as a host for Grub (used as /boot, but
never mounted as /boot except temporarily for maintenance), any Grub version
you please from any distro or from upstream can be installed there,
regardless what distro(s) are installed elsewhere.
