Follow-up Comment #2, bug #39527 (project grub): I cannot reproduce it on openSUSE 13.1 M3 using mostly up-to-date trunk. I created degraded array md127 with single member /dev/sdc1 using your command, formatted as ext2 and installed grub2 on /dev/sdc using (mounted) md127 as --boot-directory. It installed without issues.
